Welcome to Fogwell. We’re a very small wine company with one simple aim: Beautiful Syrah.

Who

Two families, one wine.

We are two families: Fogwell and Alheit. Our families like camping, fishing, hunting, having a braai after church, and of course drinking great wine together.

Why?

Life is Short. You need to stop and smell the Syrah.

Where

We’re based in the beautiful coastal town of Hermanus in South Africa. We’re not saying it’s the best town in the country - that’s what everyone else says.

Our Vineyards

Excuse the mystery. Let’s just say we have two outstanding sites to work with. One in the Swartland on schist soils, one in the Polkadraai (southern Stellenbosch) on granite soil.

They have vastly different personalities. The schist soil parcel is dark and brooding, showing black olive, violets, and sweet herbs. It has great concentration and a firm structure. The granite vineyard
is bright and perfumed, showing red fruits and pepper with fine sappy tannins. The two parcels marry nicely to make a beautiful wine.

Winemaking

Our process is simple and careful, employing spontaneous fermentation and long ageing on fine lees in a combination of cement vessels and old oak barrels. Our aim is to make wines that are complex and energetic rather than fat and heavy.

Join the Waiting List

Our production is very small. We will open our shop once a year in the spring for a few days. Wine will be delivered directly to the address of your choosing once the shop has closed.
